Australia posted a total of 264 runs after batting first. India struggled during the powerplay, losing both openers early and finishing 10 overs with a score of 55/2, as Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli were at the crease.

Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill faced Ben Dwarshius, who began the bowling with the new ball. Rohit Sharma got off to a strong start, hitting a six off Nathan Ellis's over, but was given another chance when Cooper Connolly dropped a regulation catch at point.

Rohit Sharma was fortunate again when Travis Head dropped him this was a tougher catch as Head made ground from extra cover but was unable to secure it.

Despite the early setbacks, Rohit and Shubman managed to find boundaries. However, India’s Vice Captain, Shubman Gill, was dismissed by Dwarshius, who bowled him with a well-pitched length ball that Gill dragged onto his stumps. This dismissal reduced India's score to 30/1 in just 5 overs.

Virat Kohli joined Rohit Sharma in the middle, and after Connolly's poor performance with the bat and in the field, Captain Steve Smith decided to give him another chance. Connolly made an immediate impact by trapping Rohit Sharma lbw, fulfilling the turnaround that Smith was looking for.
