Hardik Pandya-Rohit Sharma For Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians are five-time champions of the Indian Premier League. They are heading into this season on the back of an indifferent campaign last year when they finished tenth on the points table. A lot has changed since MI won their last IPL title in 2020.

They finished fifth in IPL 2021, tenth in IPL 2022, fourth in IPL 2023 and last again in IPL 2024. The captaincy has been handed over to Hardik Pandya from Rohit Sharma. That was a big talking point last season on the back of how their campaign went.

Unlike last year, when Hardik was booed as captain, this year, he is backed as captain by his own home fans and the fans of Indian cricket. Hardik has worked hard on his game over the last two years and earned the respect of his teammates at MI. The senior players like Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav are happy to rally around him as they look for their sixth title. Unfortunately, Hardik Pandya will miss MI's season opener as he is banned for a match by the BCCI.

The biggest headache for MI however, remains the fitness of lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah. He is set to miss the first two weeks of the season as per reports. Bumrah who is nursing a back injury that kept him out of the Champions Trophy and the England series is back at the NCA under rehabilitation.  After observing him in action, the NCA managers recommended specific exercises and advised him to return at a later date. However, there is no deadline on how soon will be available to play for his IPL franchise.

Batting Analysis

Top Order

Mumbai Indians have been able to retain their Indian core very well. Rohit Sharma will open the batting as always and with him will open Ryan Rickleton who has been making waves in South African cricket. The southpaw's batting stance and style is very close to another MI southpaw who formed a terrific partnership with Rohit, Quinton de Kock. Rohit and Ryan can form a deadly pair at the top for MI and can put opposition bowling attacks to the sword.

Middle-Order

They have an enviable middle-order as well with Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Verma and Hardik Pandya to bat at three four and five. While SKY and Hardik are experienced players, Tilak has come off age himself for MI. He had his best season for MI last season and was their second-highest run-getter last year (416 runs in 14 matches). Together the three are among the best middle-order batters in the tournament. MI would dearly hope that they fire in unison. In Mohammad Nabi, Nehal Wadhera, Bevon Jacobs and Arjun Tendulkar they have decent backups as well in that role.

Lower-Order

The lower-order also has bowlers who can bat. MI have Mitchell Santner, Deepak Chahar and Karn Sharma to fill that role for them. All three are primarily bowlers who can use the long handle when required with the bat.

Bowling Analysis

Pace Attack

MI's overall bowling attack has a lot of depth and variety. Jasprit Bumrah will be missing in action for the first two weeks but the squad has enough bowlers who can chip in his absence. Deepak Chahar is a good back up option until Bumrah returns back into the XI. He can also play alongside Bumrah if the combination fits. Trent Boult will lead the pace attack with and Reece Topley as good back up options.

Spin Attack

The spin attack is one of the weaklings of MI in IPL 2025. Karn Sharma does not play international cricket anymore and plays only in the IPL. MI had Piyush Chawla last year whom they depended upon heavily. However, the management decided to release him ahead of the mega auction. They have roped in Mujeeb Ur Rahman in place of Allag Ghazanfar who can feature in the XI. MI's spin will heavily depend on whether they play Mujeeb in the XI after Chawla's release.
