IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal confirms no need teams are to added in WPL

There will be no changes in the team strength of the Women's Premier League (WPL), the BCCI has confirmed. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, who is also a member of the WPL Committee, has confirmed that the league will proceed with the existing 5 teams. It is to be noted that earlier, the BCCI had claimed that new teams would be added to the league after three seasons.

The inception of the Women's Premier League (WPL) took place in 2023. Now, in 2025, three seasons have concluded. Instead of expanding the number of teams, the apex cricket board of the country plans on strengthening the already established format of the league.

"To further strengthen this tournament for the time being, we want to consolidate before we take a call on further addition of any team. There are no immediate plans (to add teams)," Arun Dhumal told PTI.

WPL has been successful confirms Arun Dhumal

Since 2023, all three editions of the T20 league have been extremely successful. Dhumal confirmed that there are currently no immediate plans to add more teams, as was the initial plan. Instead, the board is determined to solidify the already established format of the league.

"So, within three editions, WPL has grown phenomenally in terms of traction, for in-stadium attendance. All the broadcast numbers are very, very encouraging. And it has given new impetus to women's cricket worldwide. So, we are hoping this continues to grow. And this augurs very well for not only the tournament, but women's cricket in general," Dhumal added.

A total of 5 teams take part in WPL. These include franchise teams from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Gujarat. The WPL 2025 ended on 15th March with Mumbai Indians clinching their second title within a span of three years.

WPL season three was spread across multiple venues, showcasing that the newly formed league is ever-expanding and growing. The BCCI has also earned huge bucks from selling the five teams to the franchises. Meanwhile, with an estimated price of 1,350 crore in 2024, the WPL is the second-largest women's league in the world.
