IPL 2025 Match 5 GT vs PBKS Highlights: Explosive Start by Punjab Kings as Gujarat Titans Fight Back with Spinners

Punjab Kings started their season with an explosive performance, putting up a total of 105 runs for the loss of 2 wickets, largely thanks to their new opener, Priyansh Arya, who provided a strong start during the powerplay. 

Explosive Start from Priyansh Arya

Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first in this dew-affected match at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Punjab Kings opted to send their surprising young talent, 24-year-old all-rounder Priyansh Arya from Delhi, to open the innings alongside Prabhsimran Singh. Mohammed Siraj opened the bowling for his new team, showing some early seam movement and swing. With the pitch being soft, there was not much bounce available. Arya began his innings with a four on the second ball and ended the first over with 8 runs, including another boundary from an LBW ball on the last delivery.

Kagiso Rabada bowled from the other end with pinpoint accuracy. Though Arya attempted a big hit, he mistimed a shot right back to the bowler, but the catch was dropped by the Gujarat Titans fielders, giving him a lucky escape. After this mishap, Arya settled in and targeted Siraj, hitting him for a six and a four in the third over.

Shreyas Iyer Joins the Party

Prabhsimran Singh was the first wicket to fall for Punjab Kings. Rabada bowled a sharp bouncer, and Singh’s pull shot found the fielder in the third man region, leading to an easy catch for Arshad. Punjab Kings lost their first wicket with 28 runs on the board.

Captain Shreyas Iyer came in at number 3 with a clear intent. He swiftly attacked Rabada, hitting both a boundary and a six in the same over. Iyer and Arya were relentless, accumulating 21 runs from Arshad Khan's over, with Arya showcasing an impressive hitting display.

PBKS ended the powerplay at 73 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. Priyansh Arya, aiming for his maiden fifty on debut, faced Rashid Khan after the powerplay. He swept Khan for a boundary on the first ball, but Rashid got his revenge by dismissing Arya with a well-tossed delivery. In trying to maintain his momentum, Arya ended up finding Sai Sudarshan and was out for 47 runs off 23 balls.

GT Comeback with Spinners

Azmatullah Omarzai was sent up the order by Ricky Ponting and immediately attacked his compatriot, hitting a six straight down the ground. Shubman Gill introduced a full spin attack, with Sai Kishore bowling two tight overs. Following a fantastic start in the power play, PBKS experienced a slowdown and concluded their 10 overs with a score of 105 for 2, with Captain Shreyas Iyer at 28 runs off 16 balls and Azmatullah Omarzai at 16 runs off 13 balls.
