The BCCI has brought about a massive rule change ahead of the start of IPL 2025. The rule change will now see captains no longer getting banned for team's slow over-rate offense.

The BCCI had called for a meeting at its headquarters, where several new rules were laid down ahead of the start of the new season. The rule changes were brought about after a proper discussion with the captains.

A couple of captains have received match-bans in the IPL for slow over-rates. Rishabh Pant was banned for a match last year against RCB and Hardik Pandya will miss MI's first game against CSK in Chennai as he is banned for his team's slow over-rate as well. However, going ahead, captains will not be banned, instead they will be penalised with demerit points.

"The captain will be penalised with demerit points but will not face a match ban for the slow over-rate. The Level 1 offence will be charged 25 to 75 percent match fees with demerit points which will be calculated for next three years. A Level 2 offence, if exactly deemed serious, will result in four demerit points" said a report by Cricbuzz.
"For every 4 demerit points accumulated, the match referee can impose a penalty, either in the form of a 100 percent fine or additional demerit points. These demerit points could potentially lead to a match ban in the future," a source in the know said. But for slow overrate it won't be a match ban (immediately)" the report further added.

The BCCI has lifted the saliva bans a restriction initially imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICC made it permanent in 2022 which meant that the bowlers could not get the ball to reverse swing.

Apart from lifting ban on captains, two other important rule changes happened after the meeting on Tuesday. The BCCI has lifted the saliva ban and additionally stated that the Impact Player" rule will be in play till 2027 after which it will be reviewed.

"The IPL will continue to implement the Impact Player rule, allowing teams to substitute one player during a match, at least until 2027," a source has informed Cricbuzz.
