Champions Trophy 2025 - IND vs NZ: Rohit Sharma not retiring from ODIs

Following India's victory in the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand on Sunday, captain Rohit Sharma addressed speculation about his future in ODI cricket. There were rumours that Rohit might bring the curtains down on his ODI career, irrespective of whatever happens in the final.

However, Rohit has cleared the uncertainty surrounding his ODI future, sharing that he is not planning to retire from the format.

"No future plans. Jo ho raha hain, woh chalta jayega (Whatever is happening will keep continuing)," said Rohit as quoted on his retirement rumours.
"I am not going to retire from this (ODI) format. Going forward please don't spread rumours," he added.

Earlier, India vice-captain Shubman Gill had also informed that no discussions have taken place around Rohit’s ODI retirement.

Rohit's declaration puts an end to mounting speculation that arose after he retired from T20Is following India's T20 World Cup win last year. Some had suggested he might follow a similar path in the ODI format, particularly with the emergence of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was in the original squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 but was replaced by Varun Chakaravarthy because India wanted to go to Dubai with more spinners.

The 37-year-old has been a cornerstone of the Indian ODI team since 2013 as an opener. With over 11,000 runs in the format, he is one of India’s top-scorers. He has hammered 32 ODI centuries, including three double-hundreds. While Rohit was not in the best of form leading up the Champions Trophy 2025 final, he played a captain’s knock of 76 runs in the summit clash as India won the second consecutive ICC title under his leadership.

Beyond his personal achievements, Rohit highlighted the team's collective strength and how senior players’ hunger inspires the youngsters.

"There is a lot of hunger even in guys who have played a lot of cricket and it rubs down on even the younger players. We have five to six players who are real stalwarts. It makes the job easier for all of us."
