Mitchell Owen Century

The Big Bash League Final between the Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder was one of the fastest finals ever played in BBL history, with the Hobart Hurricanes chasing down a target of 183 runs in just 14.2 overs. This victory was largely thanks to in-form Mitchell Owen, who scored an impressive 108 runs off 42 balls, securing the Hurricanes their maiden BBL title.

After 14 years of waiting, Nathan Ellis led the Hobart Hurricanes to their first-ever championship. This season was surreal for them, as they dominated from the very beginning with no loose ends. They maintained their balance from the start, kept on winning, and qualified for the knockout stage as the first team. They then became the first to reach the finals and achieved a commanding victory over David Warner’s Sydney Thunder.

For Sydney Thunder, the main problem was Mitchell Owen. He launched an aggressive attack from the very first ball, keeping the strike to himself. Had he batted until the end, he could have single-handedly led the team to victory, scoring over 90% of the team's runs. His explosive batting set the stage for a smoother finish with more than five overs to spare.

A Short Recap

Sydney Thunder was forced to bat first, and their opening partnership between David Warner and Jason Sangha got off to a solid start. However, Captain Nathan Ellis made the crucial breakthrough by dismissing the tournament's top scorer, David Warner, who made 48 runs off 32 balls. After that brisk start, the Thunder's innings slowed down as Nathan Ellis struck twice in two balls. Despite Jason Sangha’s well-played 67 runs off 52 balls, the contributions from the rest of the batters were disappointing, and instead of aiming for a 200-run finish, the Thunder settled for 182 runs for 7 wickets at the end of 20 overs a par total on that surface.

With 182 runs on the board, fans on both sides hoped for a thrilling finish in the BBL Final chase. However, the match took a different turn as Mitchell Owen’s century made the chase easy for the Hurricanes. Matthew Wade’s fairy-tale finish in the final further solidified their victory and enabled them to clinch the title.

Mitchell Owen Destined For Greatness:

Ten years ago, Owen was recognized as one of the Hurricanes' biggest fans, being from Hobart. After watching his team lose year after year, the 23-year-old, who aspired to represent Australia, worked his way through the ranks to earn a spot on his favorite team, the Hobart Hurricanes.

It was often said that it was written in the stars that Owen would help the Hurricanes win their first-ever title, and he fulfilled that destiny. Transitioning from a frustrated, passionate fan in the stands to scoring a century in the final, Owen’s journey was truly remarkable. This is only the beginning for Owen, as the 23-year-old is destined for greatness.
