In an interesting development, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has hinted at increasing the number of games in IPL 2028. However, he has added that the number of teams will not be increased.
Currently, in the IPL, 10 teams are playing 74 games since IPL 2022. A similar pattern is being followed in IPL 2025 as well. The current season is past the halfway mark, with the league stage on till May 18. The final will be played on May 25.
Previously, there were talks about the league being expanded to 84 matches. However, plans were dropped due to the limited time frame, broadcasting trouble, scheduling troubles, and other reasons.

Arun Dhumal Stresses On More Serious Talks About 94-Match IPL Season
However, talking to ESPN Cricinfo, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal said that the BCCI is now seriously considering expansion in the number of games from 74 to 94 from the next media cycle starting in 2028. He further added that the board is thinking about a full home-and-away format as well.
"Definitely, that might be an opportunity. We've been discussing in ICC, we've been discussing in-house in BCCI. Given how the interest of the fan is changing with regard to bilateral and ICC events, in regard to franchise cricket and T20 cricket, we'll have to talk more seriously about it and see how we can create maximum value for the stakeholders of the game" Arun Dhumal said.
He further spoke about getting a larger window so that every team gets to play other teams in home and away formats.
"Ideally, we'd want a larger window, or to maybe go on from 74 to 84 or 94 at some point… So that every team gets to play against every team home and away, for that, you need 94 games" he added.
The IPL Chairman further said that given the nature of cricket that is being played along with bilateral series and windows for ICC events, the 94-match season might happen at some point.
"Given the window and the kind of commitments that we have with regards to bilateral cricket and ICC events, that may not be possible in the short term. But given the landscape, how it is changing and evolving over the years, maybe at some point in time we would look and take that option" stressed Dhumal.
