Matthew Breetzke Hits ODI Ton On Debut

Matthew Breetzke, South Africa's opener in their first match against New Zealand in the Pakistan ODI Tri-Series made his debut in the ongoing game at Lahore on Monday. The young talent opened the batting and scored 150 off 148 balls in his maiden ODI against New Zealand. His knock included 11 fours and five sixes.

The right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman opened the innings in the NZ vs SA 2nd ODI alongside his skipper Temba Bavuma. While Bavuma was dismissed early, Breetzke continued on his merry way getting to his maiden ODI fifty in his debut game.

Jason Smith batting at number three scored 41 while another wicket-keeper batsman Kyle Verreynne was dismissed for just one. Meanwhile, Breetzke, is playing with some caution after the loss of two quick wickets.

Matthew Breetzke's Rise In Domestic Cricket

He was first included in  South Africa’s Emerging Squad for a tour to Sri Lanka in 2018 and played his first provincial cricket for Eastern Province in the 2018-19 season. In Cricket South Africa's domestic season of four-day matches, he ended up as the top run-getter with three centuries and four fifties in 14 innings, at an incredible average of 60.58.

His Power-Hitting Personality

The young batter is known in the domestic circuit for his power-hitting and range-hittingskills. In his first 10 T20I games, he has already hit six sixes. He scored 416 runs in the SA20 2024 when he hit 22 sixes in the season and as many as 40 fours. He scored his runs at a strike rate of 135.50. He scored the most runs in the CSA T20 Challenge 2024. Despite his rich vein of form, the youngster missed out on a spot from South Africa's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.

International Debut For South Africa

The young batter has played 10 T20Is and one Test match so far. He made his T20I debut back in September 2023 against Australia. He made his Test match debut against Bangladesh in October 2024 and his ODI debut in this game against New Zealand.

Maiden IPL Contract

The young South African keeper-batter was picked up by Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2025 auction for 57 Lakhs. He will get a brilliant exposure in the tournament by playing in the cash-rich league and sharing the dressing room with so many superstars which will help him to grow as a cricketer in the future.
