Mike Hessen to be next Pakistan coach

As per reports across media outlets, Mike Hesson is the frontrunner to become the next head coach of the Pakistan Cricket Team. The PCB has opened applications for the post of head coach, and Mike Hesson, as of now, has emerged as one of the favorites to take up the role.

Reports further added that interim coach Aaqib Javed's role ended in February 2025. Javed started as the interim coach after former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie resigned from his position.

Javed was the interim coach of the Pakistan Cricket team when they lost an ODI and T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year. Meanwhile, Mike Hesson is currently the coach of Islamabad United in PSL 2025.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had expressed interest in signing up Hesson last year. However, back then, Hesson denied due to prior commitments. Now, he is back in the reckoning, and fresh discussions have started.

Former Pakistan head coach Saqlain Mushtaq was also in consideration, but Hesson seems to be the favorite candidate at the moment for PCB. Besides, they are looking to invest in a foreign coach looking to keep a continuity in the process. Before Hesson, PCB had invested in Jason Gillespie and Gary Kirsten, but the move did not work out as expected.

New Head Coach for Pakistan Cricket Team

The Pakistan cricket team has had a lot of changes in personnel in recent times in terms of head coaches and support staff. First, Kirsten resigned as the head coach of the Pakistan white-ball side in October 2024. His resignation followed Jason Gillespie's resignation as well after he was signed up for a two-year period in April 2024. However, he resigned in December 2024, due to results not going his way and his fallout with the PCB.

PCB is interested in getting Mike Hessen because of his proven track record as a coach. He worked as the director of cricket operations for the franchise between 2019 and 2023. In his tenure, RCB reached the playoffs twice in IPL 2021 and 2022. Hesson also worked with the national team successfully between 2012 and 2018 after he succeeded John Wright.

The deadline for the applications is May 4. Given the limited names in Pakistan cricket at the moment, the PCB is keen on getting foreign coaches to take up the mantle of the national team.
