The first double-header day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 kicked off with a bang, but for Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) star pacer Jofra Archer, it was a return to forget.Â
In a high-scoring encounter against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, Archer etched his name into the record books for all the wrong reasons. Conceding a staggering 76 runs in his four-over spell, he now holds the unwanted distinction of bowling the most expensive spell in IPL history, surpassing the previous record set by Mohit Sharma in 2024.
Archer, who missed IPL 2024 and reportedly fell sick just days before the start of this season, returned to Rajasthan Royals with high expectations after being snapped up for INR 12.5 crore. However, his comeback turned into a nightmare as SRH’s explosive batting lineup took him to the cleaners.
His figures of 0/76 dwarfed other infamous spells, such as Mohit’s 0/73 for Gujarat Titans (GT) against Delhi Capitals (DC) in 2024.Â
Here is the list of top 5 most expensive spells in the IPL history:
- Jofra Archer (Rajasthan Royals) – 0/76 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2025
In the second match of the IPL 2025 scheduled between RR and SRH at Hyderabad, Archer endured a torrid return to the tournament. Facing a rampant SRH batting line-up, including the likes of Travis Head and Ishan Kishan, he leaked 76 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket, setting a new record for the most expensive spell in the IPL history.
- Mohit Sharma (Gujarat Titans) – 0/73 vs Delhi Capitals, 2024Â
In the IPL 2024, at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, Mohit suffered a nightmare outing. Delhi Capitals' Rishabh Pant hammered the Gujarat Titans pacer for 31 runs in the final over alone, pushing his figures to 73 runs conceded in four overs without a wicket, a previous record.

- Basil Thampi (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – 0/70 vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru, 2018Â
During a match at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in 2018, Basil Thampi while bowling for SRH was taken apart by Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) batters, especially Moeen Ali and AB de Villiers. He gave away 70 runs in his four overs without a wicket and held the unwanted record for five years until Mohit surpassed it.
- Yash Dayal (Gujarat Titans) – 0/69 vs. Kolkata Knight Riders, 2023Â
In a dramatic encounter at Ahmedabad in 2023, Yash Dayal conceded 69 runs in four overs for Gujarat Titans, facing Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His spell is remembered for Rinku Singh’s five consecutive sixes in the final over, turning the game in KKR’s favour from an almost impossible situation and leaving Dayal with one of the costliest figures in the IPL history.
- Reece Topley (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) – 1/68 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, 2024Â
At Bengaluru in 2024, Reece Topley was smashed for 68 runs in his four overs by SRH’s aggressive batters. Though he picked up a wicket, his spell contributed to SRH posting the highest IPL total of 287/3, which is a record to this date.
