Samson was injured in the fifth T20I against England. The injury scare was a serious one by the looks of it. There were reports that he might have a delayed return to the IPL. However, he was assessed properly at the NCA and has the fitness Test for his batting skills. It is further reported that he is on track to pass the wicketkeeping fitness Test as well. He will be assessed by the Royals medical team as well before he is finally cleared for his wicketkeeping as well. In case Samson fails to pass that fitness Test, Rajasthan Royals have another keeping option in Dhruv Jurel who can don the gloves.

Apart from Samson, Mayank Yadav, Mohsin Khan, and Avesh Khan, and Jasprit Bumrah, are all seeking the go-ahead from the Bengaluru center of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It has been already reported that Mayank will miss the first half of the tournament. There is no return date yet for Bumrah in the IPL as the MI management is not keen on rushing with him.
Meanwhile, Rahul Dravid is back as the Rajasthan Royals coach again. Samson started at the Royals under Dravid's captaincy back in 2013 as well. The RR skipper very highly of the former Indian skipper and welcomed him back as the coach once again.
"He is a top-notch professional and makes sure everything is done properly. I was with him last month in Nagpur at RR's sports academy. From morning ten o'clock till evening five o'clock, he was standing in the heat, watching the batsmen bat and the bowlers bowl, interacting with them, discussing with the coaches. He is absolutely involved in each and everything. I think the preparation plays a huge role in his character and I think that's something I have to learn a bit more" Samson said on Rahul Dravid.
