Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has launched a scathing attack on the Cricket West Indies (CWI) following their decision to replace Rovman Powell with Shai Hope as the T20I captain.Â
Bravo, a two-time T20 World Cup winner and a revered figure in Caribbean cricket, labeled the move as “one of the worst decisions ever,” accusing the board of perpetuating “injustices towards players.”
Bravo is the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the same franchise Powell is representing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

The announcement of Powell’s removal came on Monday, alongside news of Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite also stepping down from his role. Shai Hope was named the new T20I skipper.
Taking to Instagram, Bravo expressed his dismay:
"@windiescricket once again you guys prove to the people of the Caribbean and the cricket world that the injustices towards players continues!"
"As a former player and a fan of WI cricket this is easily one of the worst decisions ever @ravipowell52 taking over captaincy when our T20 team was in 9th spot and was able to move up to 3rd sport in the rankings and this is how you guys repay him the bad treatment towards players when would it Stop! This is so sad on all levels..make it make sense! SMH #JusticeForRP."
CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe defended the decision, stating that Shai Hope’s appointment was based on the recommendation of head coach Darren Sammy.
"In terms of our white-ball leadership, after receiving the advice of Head Coach Daren Sammy on the intention to transition to Shai Hope, we spoke to Rovman Powell, who received the decision with professionalism and grace. I have expressed to him that he ought to feel dignified by his contributions to West Indies cricket, as he has played a crucial role in elevating our T20 team to new heights. His leadership has left a strong foundation, and we are grateful for his efforts," Bascombe said as quoted.
Sammy echoed this sentiment, praising Hope’s leadership credentials:Â
"Shai Hope’s appointment signals a progressive shift for West Indies cricket, given his success with the 50-over team in the last 18 months. As the team continues its evolution, Hope blends instinctive decision-making with analytical precision, using in-depth match data and player performance insights to shape strategy. Shai is a strong believer in team performances and his meticulous preparation, coupled with his calm and composed demeanor under pressure, makes him an ideal leader at this stage."

Rovman Powell's T20I Captaincy Tenure
Powell, who assumed the West Indies full-time T20I captaincy in May 2023, led the side to 19 victories in 37 matches, steering the team from a lowly ninth to third in the ICC T20I rankings.Â
His tenure included notable home series wins against powerhouses India, England and South Africa, as well as guiding the side to the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Notably, the West Indies will next compete in a T20I series in June against Ireland.
