Rohit Sharma is likely to lead the Indian team in the Test series against England, which is set to kick off on June 20. The Test series also kicks off India's World Test Championship 2025-27 campaign.
The Indian team did not have expected results under Rohit's captaincy in Tests in 2024. They were clean-swept by the Kiwis at home. Then they lost to Australia in an away Test series. The losses meant that India could not make it to the final of the World Test Championship (WTC).

It's Totally Upto Him - Steve Waugh On Rohit's Future As Test Captain
Meanwhile, former legendary Australian skipper Steve Waugh has warned Rohit Sharma ahead of the Test series against England. With questions surrounding Rohit Sharma's future as Test captain, Waugh said that it is up to him to take this decision but has warned him not to be relaxed or complacent as India captain.
"It is totally up to him. He is the only one who can solve that problem. He has got to look himself in the mirror and say, do I still want to be captain or play for India? Am I committed? "Am I putting enough time and effort into it? It is a privilege and an honour to play for your country. You can't be complacent or relax," Steve Waugh told PTI.
Rohit is turning 38 this month and decided to opt out from the final Test against Australia in Sydney owing to his poor form. Jasprit Bumrah led India in that match. However, India ended up losing the Test match and the series.

Recently, Steve Waugh shared his views on the two-tier system of Test cricket and said that he does not support the proposed idea. Waugh also has been very vocal about safeguarding the future of Test cricket in a generation where T20 cricket is gaining pace and momentum and becoming the fan favorite.
"There is stress on Test cricket, whether it will survive because we need it as a sport. T20 cricket is amazing, great for players and spectators and great for sponsors but I still think Test cricket is the very essence of cricket. The players I believe still want to play Tests to see how good they can actually be. It's the ultimate contest. Making sure that it survives and thrives and is healthy is really important" Waugh said.
Meanwhile, the BCCI took some radical steps ahead of the Test series against England. The board axed some key members of the support staff after losses to New Zealand and Australia in Tests last year.
