Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) duo Richa Ghosh and Ellyse Perry lit up the season 3 of the Women's Premier League (WPL) opening match against Gujarat Giants (GG) with sparkling knocks to enable RCB chase down a record total of 202 with six wickets in hand at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. That the RCB hunted the target with nine balls to spare gave a statement of sorts to other teams - RCB are ready to defend the WPL title. Ghosh's unbeaten (64) came off just 27 balls, which eventually shut the door on GG.
Star all-rounder Perry (57) set the base for Ghosh to implode in the run chase. The former came into the bat in the second over itself after RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana perished for just (9) runs. The Australian all-rounder stabilized the innings along with Raghvi Bist (25) and added 84 runs for the third wicket. While Bist batted slowly, Perry ensured that the asking rate never went beyond 10 runs per over.

The all-rounder's departure in the 13th over might have realived GG, but what followed next was absolute carnage as Ghosh and Kanika Ahuja (30) added 93 in just 37 balls. The former struck her runs at a mind-boggling strike rate of 237, while the latter struck at 230. Together the Ghosh Kanika duo plundered runs at a 15.08 run rate and just blew GG away.

WPL 2025 Match 1: GG lose the match with sloppy fielding and missed chances
Both Ghosh and Perry had some luck along their way as the GG fielders were guilty of dropping some simple catches, as well as being very sloppy on the field. The RCB wicketkeeper batter got a life when she didn't even open her account, and Perry was dropped on 2 and 18 in the fourth and sixth over of the innings respectively. Dropping catches of these star players proved very costly for GG as the duo made them pay with stunning 50s.

Speaking of GG, skipper Ash Gardner (79) & (2/33) led from the front with bat and ball, but alas, it was not enough as the rest of the teammates let her down with missed chances and terrible fielding display. On a batting-friendly Vadadora surface Gardner's Knock and Beth Mooney's (56) allowed GG to post a mammoth score, but in the end, it was just not enough.
