Asha Shobana

Ahead of the start of Women's Premier League (WPL) 2025, defending Champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have been hit by injuries to star players Asha Shobana and Pooja Vastrakar respectively. Both the players are ruled out of the WPL 2025 season. Railways' wicketkeeper Nuzhat Parween has joined as a substitute in place of Shobana, while MI have roped in Under-19 star Parunika Sisodia in place of Vastrakar.

All-rounder Vastrakar is yet to fully recover from an ankle ailment that has not allowed her to take the field since October 2024, according to a report from MI. While Shobana has not played any cricket since suffering a knee injury against Australia in the Women's World Cup 2024.

Mumbai Indians on Parunika Sisodia

Parunika last turned out for India in their title-winning Under-19 World Cup. The youngster also played a starring role for the team against England in the Under-19 match, which helped her win the player of the match award.

"Fresh from winning the under-19 T20 World Cup and bamboozling opponents with his superb left-arm spin, Parunika Sisodia is all set to join the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2025 Women’s Premier League. She joins at her base price of INR 10 lakhs. Her 3/21 against England in the semi-final and 2/6 against South Africa in the final are testament to the talent and the big-stage temperament we are talking about. She’s set to replace Pooja Vastrakar, who, unfortunately, hasn’t recovered from the injury that’s kept her out of action since October 2024. Paltan, let’s get together and wish our star all-rounder a speedy recovery!" MI said in a statement.

Nuzhat Parveen joins RCB squad

Meanwhile, Asha Shobana's absence will be a body blow for RCB, as the leg spinner was the star performer for the team during the title-winning campaign in 2024. Asha picked up 12 wickets in 10 games and managed to form a formidable partnership with Shreyanka Patil. Parveen, is not a like-for-like replacement for Shobana, as she is a wicketkeeper batter. Nuzhat will be a backup for Richa Ghosh in the RCB squad.
