Rohit Sharma vs Shama Mohamad

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma is been trending for political reasons all thanks to Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed, who called him 'overweight' and "the most unimpressive captain India has ever had." The former journalist and TV news anchor took social media by storm with this body-shaming comment after Rohit Sharma could score only 15 runs off 17 balls in India's last group stage match of the ongoing Champions Trophy match against New Zealand. However, since that post, Congress has stepped in and has asked her to delete the post after it faced backlash from the cricket-frenzy nation.

Shama took to social media and wrote: "Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!"

Rohit Sharma's fans did not like the comments made by the Congress spokesperson and started replying to her comment by sharing images of Rohit Sharma's stats and his legacy in white-ball cricket. While the BJP said the remarks reflected the typical 'Congress mindset' of humiliating athletes.

The next morning, Dr. Shama Mohamed clarified her remark on 'X', stating it was "generic" in nature and she "failed to understand how in a democracy, we don't have the right to speak". This disastrous statement didn't help and left Congress shameful and embarrassed. Now, the party has a huge task in hand to repair the damage done by Dr. Shama. Following a severe backlash and orders by Congress, she deleted all the posts, including the one that sparked the controversy as well as those in which she had defended herself.

BJP hits back at Dr. Shama Mohamed & Congress after Rohit Sharma row

Radhika Khera, who is part of the BJP, hit back at Congress and Dr. Shama by stating, "This is the same Congress that humiliated athletes for decades, denied them recognition, and now dares to mock a cricketing legend? The party that thrives on nepotism is lecturing a self-made champion?"

As of now, Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera said this morning that Ms Mohamed's posts do not reflect the party's stance. "She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future. The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy," said Mr Khera.

Khera's remarks came after the BJP called out the Congress over Ms. Mohamed's posts, which it said was "shameful".

"Do they expect Rahul Gandhi to now play cricket after failing in Indian politics," asked BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari in an online post. He later told NDTV that the Congress leader's remark reflects their party's "Emergency mindset" and is an insult to every patriot who supports the Indian cricket team.

Ms Mohamed also wrote a disgusting comment and countered a Pakistan-based sports journalist who called Mr Sharma a "mighty effective and world-class performer" while reacting to her post.

"What is so world-class about him when compared to his predecessors like Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Dhoni, Kohli, Kapil Dev, Shastri & the rest! He is a mediocre captain as well as a mediocre player who got lucky to be the Captain of India," she said.
