On Thursday, the BCCI introduced a 10-point policy aimed at promoting "discipline and unity" within Indian cricket. Key measures include making domestic cricket mandatory, limiting the presence of families and personal staff on tours, and banning individual commercial endorsements during active series. Head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly requested these restrictions after reviewing the team's recent poor performances. Non-compliance with the new guidelines could lead to penalties, such as reductions in players' retainer fees from central contracts and a ban from participating in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

This situation served as a wake-up call following the disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the significant loss to New Zealand at home. This new approach was approved by Gautam Gambhir and Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar after incorporating their suggested points.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was plagued by off-field issues, including dressing room conflicts and player selection problems, which ultimately tarnished the reputation of the Indian cricket team.

Now, these new points have been put into action, resulting in veterans like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participating in the Ranji Trophy, per a policy point that was outlined. Let’s take a look at the 10-point policy.

Key Points - BCCI new Policy Document for India Men’s Team

  • Mandatory Participation in Domestic Cricket for National Selection: Players must participate in domestic cricket to be considered for national selection, ensuring they maintain match fitness and form.
  • No Separate Travel for Tours, Matches, or Training: Players are required to travel with the team for all tours, matches, and training sessions to foster team cohesion and unity.
  • Family Allowance on Long Tours: Players' families (partner/children) are permitted to stay for up to two weeks during long tours, maintaining a balance between professional commitments and personal well-being.

  • Restriction on Personal Staff During Tours/Series: The presence of personal staff on tours or during series is restricted, focusing on team dynamics and reducing potential distractions.
  • Ban on Personal Shoots/Endorsements During Series/Tours: Players are prohibited from engaging in personal commercial shoots or endorsements during active series or tours, ensuring full availability for BCCI commitments, including shoots and official functions.
  • Consequences of Non-Compliance: Failure to adhere to these guidelines may lead to disciplinary actions, including sanctions preventing participation in BCCI-conducted tournaments such as the IPL, as well as deductions from annual contracts.
  • Mandatory Full Attendance at Practice Sessions: All players are required to remain for the entire duration of scheduled practice sessions and travel together to and from the venue. This initiative aims to promote "commitment" and foster a strong work ethic within the team. It specifically addresses the issue of star players, who have often been accustomed to leaving the nets early in separate cars, ensuring that they stay for the full session and contribute to team unity and discipline.
  • Coordinating Equipment Shipments to the Centre of Excellence: Players are asked to work with the team management when sending their equipment and personal items to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Any extra costs from separate arrangements will be paid by the player. In the past, some senior players have sent their equipment ahead for rehab at the NCA without covering the additional costs. This new policy ensures better coordination and accountability, preventing unnecessary expenses.
