Mahmudullah Riyad, a stalwart of Bangladesh cricket, has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing down curtains on a distinguished career that spanned nearly two decades.
His decision came on the heels of Bangladesh's disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy 2025, where they failed to win a single match. The 39-year-old played his final international game against New Zealand in the Champions Trophy, scoring 4 runs off 14 balls.
The all-rounder had already conveyed to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to not consider him for the central contracts.
Mahmudullah leaves the sport as one of Bangladesh's most prolific run-scorers with over 11,000 runs across all formats. Playing 430 international matches, he smashed nine centuries and 56 fifties in his career. He was also often used as an off-spinner and finished his career with 166 international wickets.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Mahmudullah expressed his gratitude to his teammates, coaches, family and fans for their unwavering support throughout his career.
“All praises only for the Almighty Allah.I have decided to retire from international cricket.I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches & specially my fans who has always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in laws specially my father in law & most importantly my brother Emdad Ullah who has been there for me constantly since my childhood as my coach & mentor,” Mahmadullah wrote on Facebook.
“And finally thanks to my wife & kids who have been my support system through thick & thin.I know raeid will miss me in red & green jersey. Not everything comes to an end in a perfect way but you say yes & move forward. PEACE........... Alhamdulillah. Best wishes to my team & Bangladesh cricket,” he added.

Mahmudullah Riyad’s International Career
Mahmudullah's journey in international cricket began in 2007, and over the years, he evolved into a vital cog in the Bangladesh team. His contributions spanned across all formats, showcasing his versatility and resilience.
One of the defining moments of Mahmudullah's career was his historic century in the ODI World Cup 2015 against England, becoming the first Bangladeshi player to achieve this feat. He then smashed another century in the same edition vs New Zealand.
In yet another remarkable achievement, Mahmudullah hammered a hundred in the Champions Trophy 2017 and knocked out New Zealand. The right-handed batter brought up his fourth hundred in an ICC event in the 2023 ODI World Cup versus South Africa.
His retirement marks the end of a significant chapter for Bangladesh cricket, leaving a void, especially which has become more prominent also because of the ODI retirement of his teammate Mushfiqur Rahim.
