India Cricket Team Captain Rohit Sharma is all set to get a stand named after him at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has received several requests and proposals from the club members to name the stand after past players who have richly contributed to India and Mumbai Cricket. Rohit's name is also one of the names proposed by MCA after he became the first skipper from Mumbai to win two ICC events - the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025 event.

Along with Rohit Sharma, Sharad Pawar, the late Vilasrao Deshmukh, and the late India captain Ajit Wadekar, the late Eknath Solkar, the late Dilip Sardesai, and the late Padmakar Shivalkar's names have been suggested by the MCA club members.

“There have been suggestions from members, and the final decision will be taken by the general body members of the Mumbai Cricket Association,” MCA president Ajinkya Naik told The Indian Express.

In the recently held Apex Council meeting of MCA, Rohit Sharma's name to have a stand or a lounge named after him was proposed. Not only has the veteran won ICC trophies, but he is also India's finest-ever opener to emerge in white-ball formats.

MCA known to honor their heroes, Rohit Sharma set to join elite list

Over the several years, MCA has been known to honor their sporting heroes by either naming a stand or lounge in their honor. Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Merchant have stands named after them at the Wankhede Stadium. While the East Stand is named after Gavaskar, the West Stand is named after Merchant. The North Stand belongs to Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar. However, with so many requests from club members in the latest Apex Council meeting, MCA does not have suitable avenues left to honor their cricketing icons.

As per MCA rules, naming stands after players need the AGM's green signal, which is set to take place on April 15.
