According to reports in the Indian Express, the idea of having a stand named after Rohit Sharma at the Wankhede stadium is yet to gather full force. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) received requests from former cricketers who have played a big role in the development of Mumbai cricket.
Rohit Sharma's name was among the suggestions as well. Apart from him, late India captain Ajit Wadekar, late Eknath Solkar, late Dilip Sardesai, late Padmakar Shivalkar, and former India captain Diana Edulji are the names that are being discussed.
Rohit Sharma's name came into recognition after he recently led India to two back-to-back ICC titles. He won the T20 World Cup title in 2024. In 2025, he led India to their third Champions Trophy title.

The Indian Express report quoted MCA president Ajinkya Naik saying that names of several former Mumbai greats have been suggested by its board members to name stands and walking bridges around the Wankhede stadium.
"The MCA has received requests and proposals from its club members to name stands or assorted places outside the stadium on its past presidents, Sharad Pawar, late Vilasrao Deshmukh, as well as late India captain Ajit Wadekar, late Eknath Solkar, late Dilip Sardesai, late Padmakar Shivalkar, former India captain Diana Edulji and current India captain Rohit Sharma. There have been suggestions from members and the final decision will be taken by the general body members of the Mumbai Cricket Association," MCA president Ajinkya Naik told The Indian Express.
Meanwhile, there are stands named after the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar already around the Wankhede stadium. The East Stand is named after Sunil Gavaskar, and the West Stand is named after Sachin Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar.
Meanwhile, Rohit's name will be discussed along with the others during MCA's Apex Council meeting on April 15. Only Virat Kohli has a stand named after him at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi among the active cricketers.
