The 18th season has introduced Hawk-Eye technology to make the final call on outside off-wides and overhead wides. Now, the third umpire will make the ultimate decision with the help of this newly implemented IPL Smart System ahead of the IPL 2025.

The BCCI has announced that Hawk-Eye technology will play a crucial role in making these wide calls, as last season saw considerable confusion over decisions, many of which were marked incorrectly by the end of the match. The on-field umpires will be relieved of this responsibility, and the TV umpire will receive assistance from Hawk-Eye to announce the decisions.

This new change in the system was presented to the team captains who were present at the BCCI headquarters for the captains' meeting.

Smart System for Overhead Wides

This new system is similar to the technology previously used for calling over-the-waist no-balls, and it will now be utilized for adjudicating overhead wides. The ball-tracking technology integrated with Hawk-Eye will track the height of the ball as it passes the batter at the popping crease. This height will then be compared to the batter’s recorded head height while standing upright, which is stored in advance. If the ball's height exceeds the recorded head height, it will be called a wide. The head heights of all players will be stored in a database, eliminating any subjective judgment in the decision-making process, and the measurements will be carried out by an automated system.

Improved Wide Guidelines

Now, the wide guideline will move with the batter. If a batter moves an inch beyond the off-stump, the wide guideline will also adjust by one inch. Hawk-Eye technology will adjudicate the measurements in the TV umpire’s room, and the umpire will declare the final call with the help of technology. It’s important to note that these measurements will not be displayed on television; they will only be visible in the TV umpire room. This system will not apply in the case of legside wides. These improvements are part of the IPL Smart Systems introduced in 2024.
