IPL 2025 - MI vs SRH: Mumbai's Bowling Brilliance Restrains Uncharacteristic Hyderabad

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) scored 162 runs in the first innings of the 33rd match of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium on April 17.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl first. SRH, coming off a morale-boosting win against Punjab Kings (PBKS), struggled in the powerplay on an uncharacteristic Wankhede pitch that assisted the bowlers.

SRH’s openers Travis Head (28 runs off 29 balls) and Abhishek Sharma (40 runs off 28 balls) faced a probing new-ball spell from MI’s Deepak Chahar, Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah. Both Abhishek and Head had their catches dropped in the first over off Chahar.

The first four overs yielded only 29 runs. Abhishek, riding high from his 141 runs off 55 balls in the previous game, took the attack to Chahar, smashing three consecutive fours in the fifth over with a mix of timing and power. In the powerplay, SRH could only muster 46 runs.

MI captain Hardik Pandya struck, breaking the 59-run opening stand by dismissing Abhishek in the eighth over. Pandya’s short-of-length delivery worked for MI as Abhishek holed out in deep cover.

As Karn Sharma injured himself while fielding, Mumbai were forced to bowl Will Jacks. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise for them. The off-spinner first caused Ishan Kishan's (2 runs off 3 balls) undoing and then sent Head packing.

Nitish Kumar Reddy (19 runs off 21 balls) along with Heinrich Klaasen (37 runs off 28 balls) tried to rebuild the innings. They relied more on strike-rotation as the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers hardly gave them any loose deliveries.

As the runs came at the pace of a snail, something had to give. Nitish tried to get under a low full-toss but could not get the power behind his shot. A catch was taken by Tilak Varma as SRH’s innings continued to plunge down.

Finally, Klaasen freed himself from the shackles in the 18th over. He hammered two fours and as many sixes of Chahar, giving SRH a hope of a strong finish.

However, it did not last for long as Bumrah castled Klaasen on the first ball of the 19th over. Only four runs came off it.

Aniket Verma (18* runs off 8 balls) smashed two back-to-back maximums in the final over off Pandya. Pat Cummins (8* runs off 4 balls) finished off the innings with a six to take SRH to 162 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs.
