Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar has pointed out that Shreyas Iyer did not get the recognition he deserved for leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 title.
The comments came during Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) eight-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025, where Iyer, now PBKS captain, smashed an unbeaten knock of 52 runs off 30 balls, decorated with three fours and four sixes, to chase 172 runs in just 16.2 overs.
Speaking from the commentary box as Iyer dismantled the opposition attack, Gavaskar did not mince his words and stated that Iyer did not get enough credit for captaining KKR to the trophy last year.

"Shreyas was the captain of the KKR side that won in 2024 and I believe that he did not get the credit that he deserved. His captaincy record is quite impressive," Gavaskar said as quoted on commentary.
Kolkata Knight Riders Release Shreyas Iyer
Iyer’s IPL campaign in 2024 with KKR was nothing short of a redemption arc. After missing the 2023 season with a back injury, the 30-year-old returned with a vengeance, steering a powerhouse squad featuring Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell to glory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final.
Yet, despite delivering KKR’s first title in a decade, he was let go by the franchise in a move that stunned fans and pundits alike. Punjab Kings invested in him, shelling out a jaw-dropping INR 26.75 crore to secure his services.

Punjab Kings' Performance in IPL 2025
As IPL 2025 heats up, Iyer’s new chapter with Punjab Kings is off to a roaring start. The Kings have won both of their matches so far in the ongoing season.
While Punjab began their campaign with a 11-run win over Gujarat Titans (GT), they defeated LSG on Tuesday to occupy second position on the IPL 2025 points table. Iyer scored half-centuries in both the games.
