Zimbabwe is hosting Afghanistan for a complete tour, and the T20 series is underway. The first T20I in Harare was a thrilling contest, with Zimbabwe surprising Afghanistan from the very start to take a crucial series lead. Their dominant performance from the outset set the tone for an unforgettable victory. Here’s a glimpse of how Zimbabwe clinched the win and managed to turn the tide in their favor, showcasing their strategic brilliance and resilience throughout the match.
Early Wickets Propel Zimbabwe
The match took place in Harare, where the pitch provided a balanced contest between bat and ball. Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Richard Nagarva was instrumental for them during the powerplay, taking two wickets, including that of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 0 runs off 3 balls. Alongside Nagarva, Sikandar Raza also made an impact in the powerplay, claiming two wickets and reducing Afghanistan to a precarious 34/4 by the end of the powerplay. This was an impressive bowling effort from the pacers, who significantly restricted Afghanistan from the outset.
Veteran Karim Janat played a key role in reviving Afghanistan's innings, scoring 54 runs off 49 balls, while Mohammed Nabi contributed a quick 44 runs off 27 balls. Together, they propelled Afghanistan to a total of 144/6 in their 20 overs. Although this target appeared below par, Afghanistan had an advantage with their premium pace attack. Zimbabwe's bowling unit, however, delivered a solid performance, effectively limiting the run-scoring opportunities from the start and preventing any acceleration.

Methodical Approach from Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe faced a challenging run chase against Afghanistan, and given the quality of their bowling attack, it appeared difficult. However, Zimbabwe adopted a steadier approach, focusing on playing along the ground instead of attempting big shots. Naveen ul Haq struck early in the powerplay, dismissing T. Marumani for just 9 runs. Dion Mayers and Brain Bennett then played cautiously, scoring at a rate of 7 runs per over until the 13-over mark. Their partnership of 75 runs off 62 balls ended when Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan made a crucial breakthrough by dismissing Brain Bennett for a well-played 49 runs off 49 balls.Â
As the pressure mounted, Sikandar Raza hit some quick boundaries to reduce the asking run rate, but his innings did not last long. The 15th over turned out to be dramatic, as Naveen ul Haq, who had been bowling well, lost control and delivered 13 balls in that over, including 5 wides and a no-ball, conceding 19 runs. This put Zimbabwe in a strong position at 107/3, needing just 37 runs from the last 30 balls.Â

However, Rashid Khan fought back, taking two wickets in one over, which brought Afghanistan right back into the match. Mujeeb then bowled exceptionally well, allowing only 4 runs in his over. With 21 runs needed off the last two overs, Naveen ul Haq returned to bowl and gave up 10 runs, leaving Zimbabwe needing 11 runs off the final over.Â
With great patience, Tashinga Musekiwa and Wellington Masakadza guided Zimbabwe to victory, sealing the match on the last ball. This win was crucial for the home team, and the fans were elated after a disappointing home series in the previous match. This strong start was important for the series.
Afghanistan put up a good fight; however, a few mistakes and being 20 runs short on this pitch ultimately cost them the match. They can certainly bounce back, as they have had consistent results regardless of their opponents in recent years. Stay tuned for more updates on the Zimbabwe vs. Afghanistan series!
