Cricket in LA Olympics 2028

Cricket will be back in the Olympics for the first time after 128 years at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that six teams will be participating in the event.

Cricket was first played in the Olympics in 1900 and is making a comeback after 128 years. After the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, cricket will be part of the Brisbane Olympics in 2032 as well.

Cricket will be played in the T20 format in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Six teams are competing in both the men’s and women’s categories. As many as 90 players will be allowed to participate in the event, with as many as 15 members in every squad.

Cricket is one of five new sporting disciplines that will be included in the Los Angeles Olympics. Alongside cricket will be squash, flag football, baseball/softball, and lacrosse. The USA, being the hosts, will get a direct qualification in the Olympics. The qualification process for the other five teams will be finalised later.

Cricket Officially Included In Los Angeles Olympics 2028

Cricket as an event in the 2028 Olympics was given the green signal by the the International Olympic Committee Executive Board on Wednesday, 9 April. The 2028 Olympics will have a total of 351 medal events, 22 events more than the Paris Olympics in 2024.

A total of 10,500 athletes will be participating across various disciplines, with 698 athletes across five new sports events, the IOC added saying.

Cricket was played in the T20 format in the Asian Games in 2010, 2014 and 2023. More recently, in 2023, eight teams participated in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. At the Hangzhou Asian Games, 14 teams participated from the men's category, while nine from the women's category.
