South Africa begin their ICC Champions Trophy campaign facing Afghanistan in their first match in Karachi on February 21, Friday. This is the second match in Karachi and the first for the two teams clubbed in the same group.
Afghanistan and South Africa are part of Group B alongside England and Australia. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand are part of Group A.
Afghanistan last played in an ODI series against Zimbabwe in December 2024 and beat them 2-1 in the series. South Africa, on the other hand, recently played in the Pakistan ODI Tri-series which was played in Karachi and Lahore. Thus the side should have a good idea of the conditions heading into this contest.

South Africa sports minister Gayton McKenzie, previously urged the national men's cricket team to boycott their match against Afghanistan in the tournament to support Afghan women who faced severe repression under Taliban rule. However, Cricket South Africa later confirmed that they will go ahead and play the match against the Afghans to maintain the sportsmanship in the contest. Having played in the recent Tri-series in Pakistan, they are well aware of the conditions they are likely to get. The team is missing a few of their key players in Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee. Their absence might have a big impact on the side.
Afghanistan, heading into this Champions Trophy have already lost their two key spinners Allah Ghazanfar and Mujeeb Ur Rahman due to injury concerns. Rashid Khan remains the biggest hope for Afghanistan and the biggest threat for the opposition batters.
